Is your cat or dog constantly scratching on your screen door and damaging the flyscreen mesh? If this is your situation, it’s important to provide your pets with all the necessary elements to prevent them from scratching at your screen door or window screens. It can be hard to stop ingrained behaviours, especially when those behaviours are associated with a reward – “I scratch the door, the human hears me, I get let in!” There are ways to prevent your pets from ruining your screen, no matter what an impossible task it may seem.
Here are some tips for preventing your pet from ruining your flyscreens, screen doors or security screens.
Get a Pet Door/ Doggy Door installed in the Screen Door
Often your dog or cat will scratch at the door so you will let them in. The best way to combat that is by installing a pet door or doggy door in your existing screen door or security door. The pet door will allow your pet to enjoy the freedom of going in and out of the screen door without having to scratch to get your attention.
Gold Coast Security Screens and Shutters can install a pet door into existing flyscreen doors and aluminium diamond grille doors. We can’t install them into existing stainless steel security mesh doors such as Secureview, Crimsafe, Invisiguard and Prowlerproof. We can however supply and install a new Secureview security screen door with a pet door.
Please note, any security screen door with a pet door will no longer be rated a true security screen door under Australian standards.
Get pet resistant screen
Gold Coast Security Screens & Shutters installs petmesh otherwise known as pawproof mesh into a range of existing screens doors and window screens. Instead of the flimsy standard flyscreen mesh you can opt for a mesh that is thicker and tougher and specifically designed to resist scratching and claw-pokes.
Here at Gold Coast Security Screens & Shutters, we use Secureview stainless steel security mesh, for the majority of our screen doors and windows. This mesh is designed to withstand burglars from cutting the mesh and gaining entry into your home. It also has the added benefit of being pet proof! Burglars cannot cut it, and pets can’t scratch and do damage to the screen. Yes, you will outlay more money for a Secureview security screen door and window security screens to protect your Gold Coast property however it will save you the time and cost of rescreening your flyscreen door or flyscreens. We offer a great range of security screen colours for the frames to match any home or commercial property.
We are one of the most reputable security screen companies on the Gold Coast. With over 17 years industry experience you can place your trust in us. check out our 5 star reviews on Google
Get some scratch deterrent spray
Another solution to keep pets away from doors is to spray them with a scratch deterrent (the door, not the pet). Check out Pet Block Repellant Spray available at Petstock stores and online www.petstock.com.au.
Pet Block helps to keep pets away from treated areas, both indoor and outdoors, such as screen doors, beds, furniture, rugs and outdoor trees or plants. It contains natural cinnamon and lemon grass oil scents which naturally deter pets.
Unfortunately some sprays may damage the screen which would void your warranty and this is not always the most cost effective or long-term solution, depending on the tenacity of your pet.
Behaviour training
This solution isn’t a quick-fix, and you run the risk of sustaining more damage to your screen while it’s in effect. The plan of action goes like this:
- Never let your pet in while it’s clawing at the door.
- If it keeps clawing, turn around and walk away from the door.
- If it keeps clawing, ignore it (or tell it to stop) until it stops for at least 20 seconds. Once it has, reward it and let them in or out.
- Reward your pet every time your go to let them in or out and they don’t claw the screen door.
Cut their nails!
Perhaps it is time to trim your pet’s nails to ensure that they don’t ruin your screens. This is never a fun task so you might be best to employ the services of a professional that comes to you like TLC Mobile Dog Grooming http://www.tlcmobiledoggrooming.com.au
